Plato, God and the Gods

Margaret Curtis

History has judged Plato to be one of the greatest religious thinkers in the Western tradition, yet he was fiercely critical of many aspects of the spiritual environment in which he grew up. After looking at this background, we shall go on to examine several extracts from his dialogues which contributed to the later understanding of God, and conclude by tracing the way in which these ideas were worked out in the thought of some later Platonists, pagan, Jewish and Christian.

New research on Hadrian's Wall

Birgitta Hoffmann

The World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall is one of the most visited sites in Roman Britain, it has also seen a lot of research over the last twenty years, both on the wall itself, but also on the settlements and forts behind and in front of it. We now know of the existence of at least two substantial towns in its immediate vicinity as well as a number of new substantial structures that have changed the way we look at the wall. This three week course is going to discuss some of these new discoveries and new interpretations.

DAYSCHOOL:

The archaeology of Macedonia

Birgitta Hoffmann

Macedonia, the Northwestern part of Greece, the southern parts of Bulgaria and modern Macedon, was a small kingdom on the fringes of Ancient Greece, famous for its ‘warrior skills’ and wealth, due to the amount of gold, washed out of its rivers. From the fourth century onwards it became the core of a huge empire, and its best known kings: Philipp II and Alexander III (the Great) are still famous.

This dayschool will look at the archaeological remains of Macedonia, from the royal graves (with their rich furniture) and palaces to the trading towns of Thessaloniki and Philippi, along with smaller towns such as Olynth and Dion at the foot of Mt. Olympus, It will end with the Byzantine palaces and fortresses in and around Thessaloniki.

DAYSCHOOL:

Silchester, The first and last city of Roman Britain?

Birgitta Hoffmann

While not the largest town in Roman Britain, Silchester is one of the few that has not been built over and over the last 20 years it has become possibly the best studied town of this province.

As a result we are changing our views on what we understand by 'Romano-British town', beginning with our understanding that much of what we have in the past seen as typical Roman (the defences the street grid) was in fact first conceived in the Iron Age.

At the opposite end, we see that substantial parts of this settlement may have survived long into the early Middle Ages, creating a cell of Romanness, around which the later Medieval kingdoms developed.

Roman Glass from luxury to the mundane, a history of a material and its users

Birgitta Hoffmann

While first developed centuries earlie, with the discovery of glassblowing in the Levant in the 1st century BC, Rome became the first culture to really develop this material. Over the next 100 years its use crept into all areas of life. It became as common at the dining table as in the storage cupboard, and the dressing mirror.

This dayschool is going to explore the many varied uses the Romans put glass to within their lives.
