The Archaeology of the Franks
During the early Middle Ages the Franks were the dominant power in Western Europe, politically as well as economically. Their fashions in pottery and metalwork were exported to Britain and the Mediterranean, while their dynastic marriages led to a network of diplomatic links that reached from the Baltic to Italy, leaving a series of princely graves that covers most of Europe.
This course offers an introduction to the rich archaeological evidence of this powerful Medieval kingdom.

DAYSCHOOL:
Punic Carthage -
Mistress of the Mediterraean
Before the Second Punic War Carthage was the uncontested superpower in the Western Mediterranean. She dictated the terms on which other nations could trade, and was able to guarantee the supply of raw materials and luxuries for the other Bronze Age and Iron Age cultures of the region, leading to fantastic riches in the centres of power and trade. This day will look at the archaeology that the Carthaginians left over an area from Carthage and Sicily to Meols in Lancashire.
