DAYSCHOOL:
– ‘In the beginning...’:
The Book of Genesis and the genesis of Art
Christine Musgrove and Michael Tunnicliffe
The opening chapters of Genesis provide a kaleidoscope of imagery: the Creation of Light and Darkness, the four rivers of Paradise, the wiley serpent, the first murder, a floating zoo and the first skyscraper. What happens when theology meets art, when poetry is expressed through painting and the storyteller turns sculptor? How far are our impressions of what these stories mean influenced by the visual arts.
This day school explores the subject through theological (Michael Tunnicliffe) and art historical (Christine Musgrove) eyes. It aims to widen discussion on how inspirational Creation stories have been to artists and interpreters across cultures and belief systems.
