Beginner's Latin
Latin is making a bit of a comeback, but it still has the reputation to be hard. This course hopes to make Latin a bit more accessible, while still providing a good grounding in the grammar needed. The class is specifically designed to be in a small group of less than 10 in a non intimidating athmosphere.
After learning the first declension and the present tense last term, we will be adding further declensions this terms.
Learning materials will be provided, but a Latin/English dictionary will be useful.
Newcomers are always welcome.

Reading Latin - Livy and the Songs of the Vagantes II

During the spring term we plan to look at two very different pieces of literature: Livy’s account of the Wars with Hannibal, as an example of early Imperial history. In this term we will be concentrating on Hannibal's great opponent Scipio Africanus.
The second topic will be examples from the late Latin poetry of the Vagantes, song writers who were writing in Latin for a non court audience, often satirical, frequently funny and usually down to earth.
Required Language skills:
Newcomers to the group are always welcome, but should have Latin skills of a level that they can attempt reading original texts. (ie. roughly Latin GCSE or AS level, alternatively having finished the Cambridge Latin Course).
Recommended Reading:
a familiarity with the rough outline of the Second Punic Wars would be helpful to place the passages and understand some of the comments. A.Goldsworthy's or Greg Daly's, Cannae. might be a good start.
Required materials:
Latin dictionary and grammar.
