Latin Language and Literature

Spring 2011

Reading Latin: Ovid

Having finished the Cambridge Latin Course we are now embarking on reading Latin literature; which will be coupled with the occasional grammar revision as needed. The topic for the spring term will be Ovid’s Metamorphoses, probably The Lycian farmers and one or two other stories, as well as short selections from his other texts.

Required Language skills:

Newcomers to the group are always welcome, but should have Latin skills of a level that they can attempt reading original texts. (ie. roughly Latin GCSE or AS level, alternatively having finished the Cambridge Latin Course).

Recommended Reading:
Ovid Metamorphoses (preferably not the Penguin translation)

Required materials:
Latin dictionary and grammar.
The text and annotations will be provided.

Dayschool:

Cats, Dogs and Pliny the Elder

Following on from the first dayschool on Pliny the Elder’s Natural Hisory, we are going to spend a second day with this book, focusing this time on Pliny’s treatments of Dogs and large Cats (lions, panthers).

Depending on the size and experience of the group, we will be working in small groups. The day will be spent reading and translating excerpts from the Natural History and discussing the ideas expressed in it. The excerpts will be provided.


Course requirements:

Competence in Latin, equivalent to Cambridge Latin Course Book IV.
