Reading Latin:

Ovid: Ars Amatoria and Amores

Birgitta Hoffmann

Having read excerpts of the Metamorphoses and the Tristia in the last few months, it is time for the Ars Amatoria and the Amores – Ovid’s lighthearted guide to everything from selecting your partner, to flirting, to being unhappy and happy in love and his accounts of famous couples.

Much of the language skills that we saw in the other works are already present, but the pace is faster (aka the sentences shorter) and the mood is much lighter.

Required Language skills:

Newcomers to the group are always welcome, but should have Latin skills of a level that they can attempt reading original texts. (ie. roughly Latin GCSE or AS level, alternatively having finished the Cambridge Latin Course).

Recommended Reading:
Ovid, Ars Amatoria and Amores
