Poetry & Religion: A History in 6 poems

Novel Discussion Group

POETRY & RELIGION:

A HISTORY IN 6 POEMS

Barry Wood

The course will involve a close study of poems by Herbert, Blake, Hopkins, Eliot, Hill and Larkin and attempt to reveal through representative texts something of the complex relationship between English poetry and religious feeling, experience and thought.  Key individual poems by each of the chosen authors will be examined in detail and discussed in the context of some of their other work and the work of contiguous poets, such as: Donne, Dickinson, Hardy, Jennings and Duffy.  In addition to textual analysis, discussion will include: the forms and symbolism of religious verse; vision and experience; the dialogue between faith and doubt; and the situation of religion and poetry in a secular age.

Novel Discussion Group

Creina Mansfield

We meet and discuss a novel once a month. The novel chosen is usually recently published. This time, the latest Booker winner is included, as well as a novel that will interest those caught up in enthusiasm for the Edwardian era. The format is open, with participants expressing their views about all aspects of the novels. The second session (May 21st) will begin with a talk by Nicholas Murgatroyd M.A.(Cantab) who has written his Ph.D. on Doctorow. He will speak on 'Writing on the Left' (we will then have our usual discussion, so that this session is likely to finish later than 12).
