The Barbarian West c.400 – c.1000

This introductory level course examines the political history of continental Europe from the fall of the Roman Empire to the end of the first millennium. Topics covered include the ‘decline and fall’ of the late Western Roman Empire, the sub-Roman west and the Germanic successors states – Franks, Burgundians, Vandals, Ostrogoths and Visigoths, the Papacy in transition – Gregory the Great and sixth-century Italy, Gaul under the Merovingians, Charlemagne and the Carolingian Empire, Ottonian Germany and the birth of the Holy Roman Empire, and tenth century France – ‘failure of the state and feudal anarchy’?

From William I to Edward I:
English History 1066 - 1307

This introductory level course examines the England of the Norman and Angevin dynasties. Topics covered include William of Normandy, the Norman conquest and its impact, Domesday Book; disputed succession, - King Stephen, Empress Matilda and ‘the Anarchy;’ Henry II and the ‘Angevin Empire,’ King John and Magna Carta, Henry III, the barons’s revolt and the origins of Parliament and Edward I, Wales and Scotland.
