DAYSCHOOL: The Songs of Gustav Mahler
Gareth Curtis
It is hardly surprising that so much is made of Mahler’s importance as a symphonist. Yet we should also remember that, in the field of German Romantic Song, he stands second only to Schubert and possibly Schumann. In all, he completed about fifty songs which cover a wide range of subject matter (i.e. not just love-lorn youth and the beauty of nature!). They are cast in a remarkable variety of packaging, from the miniature to the symphonic, and are dressed in a myriad of moods – acerbic wit, tenderness, manic desperation, infinite longing and much else.
This study day will explore a representative selection of Mahler's songs, taking particular account of the types of text he chose and his approach to setting them.
